Solar cycle 25

The solar cycle refers to the periodic change in the Sun’s activity, including its magnetic field, sunspots, solar flares, and coronal mass ejections (CMEs). This cycle typically lasts around 11 years, during which the Sun transitions from a period of low activity (solar minimum) to high activity (solar maximum) and back again.
As of 2023, we are currently in Solar Cycle 25. Solar Cycle 25 officially began in December 2019, following the end of Solar Cycle 24. Scientists determine the beginning and end of solar cycles based on various indicators, including sunspot observations and magnetic field measurements.
The solar cycle can influence space weather, impacting satellite communication, power grids, and even astronauts in space. During periods of high solar activity, solar flares and CMEs can release large amounts of energy and charged particles towards Earth, potentially causing geomagnetic storms and disrupting technological systems.
While the solar cycle does have some influence on Earth’s climate, its impact is relatively small compared to other factors such as greenhouse gas emissions. The variations in solar radiation associated with the solar cycle contribute only a fraction of the overall warming observed on our planet.
